When the Body Won't Stop — How Hypnosis and EFT Can Help With Compulsive Habits and Body-Focused Repetitive Behaviours

You tell yourself you are going to stop. You mean it. And then — almost without realizing it — you are doing it again.

Pulling your hair. Picking your skin. Biting your nails until they bleed. Blinking repeatedly. Twitching. Touching things in a certain order. Checking and rechecking. Repeating movements that you cannot seem to explain — even to yourself.

If this sounds familiar, you are not broken. You are not weak. And you are absolutely not alone.

Body-focused repetitive behaviours (BFRBs) and compulsive habits affect millions of people worldwide — and yet they remain one of the most misunderstood and underserved areas of mental health.

What Are Body-Focused Repetitive Behaviours?

BFRBs are a group of behaviours in which a person repeatedly touches, pulls, picks, or manipulates their body — often without full conscious awareness. The most common include:

  • Trichotillomania — compulsive hair pulling from the scalp, eyebrows, eyelashes, or elsewhere

  • Dermatillomania — compulsive skin picking

  • Onychophagia — compulsive nail biting

  • Excoriation disorder — picking at existing wounds or perceived skin imperfections

  • Compulsive lip or cheek biting

Beyond BFRBs, many people also struggle with:

  • Tics and twitches — involuntary or semi-voluntary movements or sounds

  • Compulsive checking or repeating behaviours

  • Nervous habits that have become deeply ingrained and difficult to control

  • Stereotyped movements associated with anxiety or stress

Why These Behaviours Are So Hard to Stop

The reason these habits are so resistant to willpower is that they are not primarily conscious behaviours. They are driven by the subconscious mind — often as a response to underlying anxiety, emotional dysregulation, boredom, or unresolved stress.

For many people, the behaviour provides a temporary sense of relief, stimulation, or control. The subconscious learns that this action reduces distress — and so it becomes automatic, deeply wired, and incredibly hard to interrupt through conscious effort alone.

Shame and secrecy often make things worse. Many people hide their behaviours for years, feeling too embarrassed to seek help — which means the underlying emotional drivers never get addressed.

A Different Approach — Working With the Subconscious

Because these behaviours are rooted in the subconscious mind, approaches that work at that level tend to be far more effective than willpower, habit tracking, or simply trying harder.

5-PATH® Advanced Hypnosis allows us to gently explore and address the emotional roots driving the behaviour — the anxiety, the unmet needs, the unresolved feelings that the habit has been managing. By working at the subconscious level, we can begin to release the emotional charge that fuels the behaviour and create new, healthier patterns of response.

EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques) provides a powerful tool for interrupting the urge cycle in real time. When the urge arises, tapping on specific acupressure points sends calming signals to the brain's stress response — reducing the intensity of the urge quickly and naturally. Over time, regular EFT practice can significantly reduce both the frequency and intensity of BFRBs and compulsive habits.

Together, these approaches address both the symptom and its root cause — creating lasting change rather than temporary suppression.

You Deserve Support — Not Shame

If you have been struggling with a compulsive habit or body-focused behaviour, please know this — there is nothing wrong with you as a person. These behaviours develop for a reason. They made sense at some point. And with the right support, they can change.

Many clients come to me having tried everything — and feeling hopeless. What they discover is that when we address what is actually driving the behaviour, rather than fighting the behaviour itself, things can shift in ways that feel almost surprising.

You do not have to keep fighting this alone.
